Waterproof At Last!

Feeling pretty confident today that our basement water woes are now a thing of the past.

The waterproofing crew was here for 3 days this week and taught me a thing or two about how to keep a basement clean and dry. (Well, maybe not so clean… actually, they made one heck of a mess with their jackhammers while breaking up the concrete. Good thing I listened when they recommended I cover everything with sheets.)

First they dug a trench along the outside wall, from the garage all the way to my sump pump at the other end of the house.

Then they put in weeping tile (porous pipe) wrapped in protective cloth to prevent dirt from clogging the holes. The weeping tile was covered in gravel.

Next they tacked a waterproof membrane to the wall, so that any water coming inside would drain down the wall and into the trench with the weeping tile.

Finally they filled in the trench with concrete and smoothed out the floor.

So now we’re ready to reframe the walls… one of these decades when we can afford it, that is.
