New Year, New Me!

It’s New Year’s Day and I’m in a philosophical mood.

Last night we celebrated New Years as per our usual tradition – watching Lord of the Rings all the way through from beginning to end.

It was quite the marathon this year, as this year we also included all three installments of The Hobbit.

Even though we started earlier in the afternoon, we didn’t get all the way through every DVD and ended up watching The Return of the King (last volume in the trilogy) this morning.

I’ve loved these two Tolkien masterpieces ever since first reading them as a child. They’re powerful tales that speak to the indomitable will within each of us lying dormant yet forever at the ready to sustain us against all odds and when all else fails, provided we have the courage and resolve to draw upon its strength. The characters in The Lord of the Rings had all the odds stacked against them as they started on their impossible quest, yet through the power of their conviction and commitment they were able to persevere and succeed where less committed men (or hobbits) would most certainly have failed.

But instead of feeling inspired and ready to tackle the new year, today I’m a little restless.

Last year was extremely busy and looking back I realize I didn’t take enough time off from work and other responsibilities to relax, refresh and recharge.

As a result, I’m feeling a little cut off from the world, especially from family and friends.

So this year, I plan to take more time to stop and smell the proverbial roses. Less work and more play. More of the things that will rejuvenate my spirit and less worrying about everything else for a change.

And I will be sure to more regularly connect with the important people in my life.

I have a feeling 2020 is going to be a great year.
