MORE Water Damage…

What is it with water and this house?  We finally got the basement sorted around, and now this!

A few days ago I noticed water coming in through the top of the sliding door in the kitchen. So we pulled off the trim on the frame and found a wet mess underneath.

After a closer look, we realized the drywall above the door was soaking wet.  So off it came, out into the snow.

What was left was a mouldy mess!  Disgusting!

Judging by the shape of the drywall and the mould underneath it, I’d say this problem has been going on for quite some time. It just so happened the snow was blowing at the right angle this past week to come up inside the attic and there was enough of it that the drywall could no longer absorb all the water as the snow melted.

We needed to see how far the damage had traveled, so off came the end cupboard. Fortunately, that area was still dry. However, I’m now short on cupboard space and need to find a place for my dishes.

I called the roofing company to tell them the roof they replaced a year ago was leaking and needed to be inspected. To their credit, they sent a technician the very next day to inspect. He went up into the attic and found it full of snow and ice.

Going outside, he looked underneath the overhang and told me the problem was that the boards underneath the roof overhang were too short to reach the edge of the roof and the snow was blowing up inside the attic from there.

So no warranty problem, just poor construction.

Why they didn’t point this out to me when they inspected and replaced the roof and upgraded the insulation a year ago, I’ll never know…

I was told the repair work would be quite expensive as it was very cold outside. But if I wanted to wait until Spring, they would be able to do it at a much cheaper rate.

No worries, I’ll be calling someone else to do the repairs.
