How Does Your Garden Grow?

At the advice of a landscaper I had spoken to earlier in the Spring, I’m letting the garden grow on its own this first year to see what comes up.

It didn’t take long for me to realize the previous owner had put a lot of love (and labour!) into her gardens. It’s actually quite challenging for me to keep up with the weeding. I’ll spend an afternoon weeding one section, only to have an equal number of weeds reappear within the span of a few days.

As a novice gardener, I’m struggling to determine what’s a weed and what isn’t. So when in doubt, I’ve been leaving the greenery to see what it grows into.

However, I must admit it’s kind of embarrassing to not know whether something is a flower or a weed. My mother, bless her, is trying her best to make me feel better by assuring me that a weed is simply a flower that’s out of place.

I’m so glad the previous owner was such a skilled gardener, as on my own I wouldn’t have known where to start. My goal is to restore these gardens to their former glory, although it may take a few seasons for me to figure out what I’m doing…
